Assamese singer Kalpana Patowary resurrects Bhojpuri Shakespeare.


Indian folk music goes global, thanks to Bhojpuri singing sensation of Assamese origin, Kalapana Patowary with the launch of her new album The Legacy of Bhikhari Thakur. Produced by EMI/Virgin records, the album is a tribute noted Bhojpuri litterateur Bhikhari Thakur. It was launched in Mauritius on the 4th of June 2012, by the country's Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Public Infrastructure Mr. Anil Kumar Bachoo and Mr. Mookhesswur Choonee, Minister of Arts and Culture.
The richness of Bhojpuri mores have perhaps been shadowed by the massive popularity of double meaning hip shakers, thanks to the competitive rating points driven entertainment industry. It therefore comes as a surprise when one of the most popular Bhojpuri vocalists decides to stream aside from the rat race and explore the lost works of Bhikhari Thakur, fondly known as Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature for his contribution to poetry and drama.

Assam born singer Kaplana Patowary has carved a mighty niche for herself in the entertainment industry having lent her vocals to a numerous Bhojpuri songs as well as Bollywood numbers including films like Billo Barber and De Dhana Dhan. Although she has a myriad of folk and popular songs to her credit, Bhojpuri music has been her most dedicated foray. Born in 1887, Bhikhari Thakur’s creative sojourn began late in his life for he was an illiterate until quite a few decades of his life. He learnt the three Rs from a shopkeeper when he went to Calcutta following a family tradition of working in the city. The stark social and cultural variations of his village and Calcutta, as well as works of Raja Ram Mohan Roy inspired him to express his experiences through literature. On returning to his village Bhikhari Thakur formed Bhikhari Thakur Natak Mandali thus creating a theatre form called Bidesia. Unlike conventional poets and dramatists, Thakur’s work took a dig at the redundant ways and customs of the society of his. One of his most noted works includes the tale of a woman in a village whose husband leaves the village to work in a but she still has physical desires, so she gets involved with another man and has a child.Inspired by the contemporary nature of Thakur’s writings, Kalpana felt a need to share his work with a present day global audience. It turned out to be a mammoth task as the material available on Bhikhari Thakur is negligible. Luckily her rendezvous with a 98 year old dancer from the Bhikhari Thakur Natak Mandali gave her a first person account of the experiences of Tahkur’s legend as well as well walked her through his works.
Titled The Legacy of Bhikhari Thakur, Kalpana’s tribute to the Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature has nine melodious tracks, the lyrics of which were penned down by Thakur himself. His memorable poems on immigration and unemployment rendered by Kapalana's powerhouse vocals have been welcomed with warmth in many parts of the globe. It has been launched in France and Mauritius and a launch in is scheduled in the foreseeable future. It's comes as no surprise that EMI/Virgin Records has undertaken the risk of pricing this Bhojpuri album at Rs. 195.The Legacy of Bhikari Thakur takes Bhojpuri music from the masses to the classes.

A musical documentation of Bhikari Thakur, the Bhojpuri icon, brings him to the international platform.



A Bhojpuri music album for Rs.195. Quite unusual, most would say, but singer Kalpana Patowary has clinched that deal with EMI/Virgin Records. The subject of her musical exploration — Bhikari Thakur — is unusual too, where not many have ventured. “My aim is to reach the classes, introduce Bhikari Thakur's work and legacy on an international platform, so it needed that kind of pricing. Bhojpuri music isn't just about double-meaning songs — even I have sung so many — and that's what I want to highlight through this work,” explains the artiste, who has also sung and produced the album.
Titled The Legacy of Bhikari Thakur , the album comprising nine tracks is out and has been launched in France and Mauritius and will be launched in London as well, according to the singer.
So, who was Bhikari Thakur and how did an Assamese artiste who has been singing Bhojpuri songs for over nine years come to a point where she could no longer ignore his work?
“For an average person of Bihar, Bhikari Thakur is the Shakespeare of Bhojpuri literature, who was born in 1887 in a village called Kutubpur responsible for creating a theatre form called Bidesia. Here and there a few of his songs have been used, but I would say people are still largely ignorant about his work. He had with his music and writing dared to talk about such issues, that too at that time. For instance, he has written about a woman in a village whose husband leaves the village to work in a but she still has physical desires, so she gets involved with another man and has a child. He was raising the issues of unemployment and migration at that time. I felt there was a need to raise awareness regarding his work.”
All the tracks on the album were written by Bhikari Thakur, and Kalpana, using minimal acoustics, tries to retain the original flavour. The album starts from ‘Bhikari parichay', an auto-biographical narrative rendered by Kalpana.
In one of the tracks, ‘Kalyug prem', Bhikari Thakur talks about the anguish of women whose husbands have taken to drinking. “Born into a family of barbers, he, like so many fellow natives, moved to Calcutta for work. There when he saw the difference between the social conditions of his village and Calcutta and came to learn of Raja Ram Mohan Roy's work in that direction, he was deeply affected.”
Surprisingly, the man who went on to pen songs questioning the redundant ways and customs of the society of those times was an unlettered man initially. “It was a baniya in Calcutta who taught him to read and write,” she adds.
He came back to his village a changed man and formed Bhikari Thakur Natak Mandali. He went around performing his plays with a view to raise awareness.
Kalpana was lucky to find a dancer from that troupe in his village. “Now 98, he helped me a lot. I documented him and then tried to authenticate and check the pronunciations and spellings in the book Bhikari Thakur Ratnavali by Rashtra Bhasha Parishad. There was hardly any material available on him in the market.”

About 18 years ago, when I was on my work place at Chapra I also searched the books and literatures of Bhikhari Thakur, but in vain. I heartly respect Bhikhari Thakur. Like any fan, I am delighted to have a post on my fb wall by an artiste that I really enjoy listening to. 

Having been brought up listening to folk songs of Bihar by the likes of Bindhyavasini Devi, I am exposed to the best traditions of bhojpuri music. And I must say, after Sharda Sinha, you have really kept upto that tradition. I should share some of the things that I really like about your renditions:

1. Though being from Assam, you have understood the soul of bhojpuri music as few others. Incidentally, I have equally enjoyed your few Assamese songs that I have heard, Hastir Koena for example.

2. You dont just sing, you get into the song with a lot of feeling. The 'bhav' of the song comes in your facial expressions and action also.

'बिदेसियाÓ की धमक विदेश तक

'बिदेसियाÓ पहुंचा विदेश। माध्यम बनी भोजपुरी की मशहूर गायिका कल्पना पटवारी। लंदन की वर्जिन कंपनी ने कल्पना की आवाज में नौ गाने रिकार्ड किए हैं। नाम है : द लीगेसी आफ भिखारी ठाकुर। बेशक, इस आडियो कैसेट से भोजपुरी के शेक्सपियर कहे जाने वाले भिखारी ठाकुर को अब अंतरराष्ट्रीय पहचान मिलेगी। बिदेसिया भिखारी की लीजेंड रचना है। लंदन की इस मशहूर म्यूजिक कंपनी वर्जिन भिखारी ठाकुर को... पहली बार पेश कर रही है। पर, वर्जिन तक कैसे पहुंचे भिखारी ठाकुर, इसकी कहानी भी दिलचस्प है। यह सारा प्रयास कल्पना है।
भोजपुरी की रोटी तो बहुत लोग खाते हैं, खा रहे हैं। हर रोज भोजपुरी में गायक पैदा हो रहे हैं, लेकिन आज तक किसी गायक ने भिखारी पर ऐसा काम नहीं किया, जितना असम की इस गायिका ने। भूपेन हजारिका से प्रभावित कल्पना बताती हैं कि असम की आवाज भूपेन दा थे। ऐसे ही एक आवाज की तलाश बिहार की थी। कई नाम दिमाग में आए, विद्यापति, भिखारी ठाकुर, महेंदर मिसिर। लेकिन भिखारी ठाकुर पर दिमाग अटक गया। बड़ा अपोजिट नाम लगा। भिखारी...ठाकुर। इनके प्रति जिज्ञासा बढऩे लगी। पता चला, ये हज्जाम थे। नाई का काम करते थे। कलकत्ता (अब कोलकाता) में रहे। वहां राजाराम मोहन राय, स्वामी विवेकानंद एवं उस दौर में चल रहे सुधार आंदोलन या नव जागरण से काफी प्रभावित हुए। वहां की समस्या को बिहार में भी देखा। इसके बाद बिहार में अपनी मंडली बनाई। सामाजिक विसंगतियों-कुरुतियों, दहेज प्रथा, बाल विवाह आदि पर उनकी लेखनी चल पड़ी। ये सब जानकारी तीन साल के शोध से मिली। शोध के सिलसिले में बहुत लोगों से मिलना हुआ, लेकिन बहुतों ने बिदेसिया का जिक्र भर किया। इसके बाद फुलस्टाप। इतने बड़े लीजेंड पर कोई म्यूजिकली काम नहीं हुआ था। सो, इस दिशा में प्रयास किया। कल्पना उत्साहित हो बताती हैं, नौ गीतों का चयन किया। इसे विदेशी कंपनी से जारी करने की ठानी। कई कंपनियों से बात हुई। भिखारी का नाम सुनते ही वे न...न...न...कह देते। लंदन की वर्जिन से बात हुई। वे बात सुनते ही दो मिनट में राजी हो गए।
इस तरह भिखारी ठाकुर पहली बार, गीत के जरिए, दुनिया में पहुंचेंगे। अब ये माइकल जैक्सन के बगलगीर हो गए। वर्जिन ने माइकल के अलावा बहुत सारे ग्रैमी अवार्ड गायकों के आडियो निकाले हैं।
हम उम्मीद कर सकते हैं, दुनिया के 14 देशों में बोली जाने वाली भोजपुरी की अब प्रतिष्ठा और बढ़ेगी। और, देश की सरकार उसे आठवीं अनुसूची में शामिल करेगी।

कौन हैं भिखारी ठाकुर
भिखारी का जन्म 18 दिसंबर, 1887 को बिहार के कुतुबपुर दियारा में हुआ था और 10 जुलाई, सन 1971 को 84 साल की उम्र में उनका निधन हुआ। वे जीविकोपार्जन के लिये गांव छोड़कर खडगपुर चले गये। वहां उन्होंने काफी पैसा कमाया किन्तु वे अपने काम से संतुष्ट नहीं थे। रामलीला में उनका मन बस गया था। इसके बाद वे जगन्नाथ पुरी चले गए। अपने गांव आकर उन्होने एक नृत्य मण्डली बनायी और रामलीला खेलने लगे। इसके साथ ही वे गाना गाते एवं सामाजिक कार्यों से भी जुड़े।

भिखारी ठाकुर के प्रति संगीतमय श्रद्धांजलि

दोस्तों, मैं कल्पना हूं। वही कल्पना जिसे आपने भोजपुरी गाना गाते हुए सुना है। आज अपना बिहार के माध्यम से आप सभी के साथ कुछ विचार साझा करना चाहती हूं। संगीत मुझे अपने पिता विपिन पटवारी से विरासत में मिला है। मैं मूल रुप से आसाम के ग्वालपाड़ा जिले की रहने वाली हूं, जहां की लोकगायकी परंपरा भी बहुत समृद्ध है। पापा रेडियो आर्टिस्ट थे और उनके कारण मैंने 3 साल की उम्र से ही गाना सीखना प्रारंभ कर दिया। फ़िर पापा ने मेरी दिलचस्पी को देखते हुए शास्त्रीय संगीत सीखने को प्रोत्साहित किया। यह मेरे संगीतमय जीवन का वास्तविक प्रारंभ था।
समय के साथ मैंने आसाम के लोकगीत के अलावा पाश्चात्य संगीत शैली पर आधारित गाने गाये। लोगों ने खूब सराहा। तब लोगों की सलाह मानकर मैंने भी कैरियर संवारने मुंबई चली आई। मेरा पहला म्यूजिक एलबम वेस्टर्न म्यूजिक पर आधारित था। बाद में मैंने क्षेत्रीय भाषाओं में गाने गाये। वर्ष 2002 में मेरा साक्षात्कार भोजपुरी से हुआ।
मेरा पहला भोजपुरी एलबम होली गीतों पर आधारित था। जिसके बोल द्विअर्थी थे। हालांकि तब मुझे इसकी जानकारी नहीं थी। मसलन एक गाने में पिचकारी शब्द का इस्तेमाल किया गया था। यह शब्द आसाम में भी लोकप्रिय है और यहां इसका एक ही मतलब होता है और वह है रंग खेलने वाली पिचकारी। खैर, लोगों को मेरा गाना अच्छा लगा। इसके बाद भक्ति गीत “ए गणेश के पापा” मेरे लिए टर्निंग प्वायंट साबित हुआ। बिहारवासियों का प्यार मिलने लगा। मैंने एक से बढकर एक भक्ति गीत गाये। सभी ने मुक्त कंठ से सराहा। इसके बाद ससुरा बड़ा पईसावाला फ़िल्म में आईटम सांग गाने का अवसर मिला, जिसे भोजपुरीभाषियों ने सराहा।
वर्ष 2004 में लोगों ने मुझे भोजपुरी में सोलो एलबम के लिए प्रेरित किया और “गवनवा ले जा राजा जी” लोगों के बीच आ सका। इसे भी आशातीत सफ़लता मिली। बाद में महुआ चैनल पर एक टैलेंट हंट प्रोग्राम में जज बनने का अवसर मिला। उस दौरान मुझे यह जानकर सुखद अहसास हुआ कि आज की युवा पीढी भोजपुरी गाना जो सकारात्मक रुप में लेती है और वे मुझे आदर्श मानते हैं। इस अहसास ने एक और जिम्मेवारी का अहसास भी करा दिया। यह जिम्मेवारी थी भोजपुरी की खोयी हुई गरिमा को वापस लाने की।
मेरे लिये यह एक चुनौतीपूर्ण कार्य था। डा भूपेन हजारिका मेरे सबसे बड़े आदर्श हैं। आज वे इस दुनिया में नहीं हैं, लेकिन बावजूद इसके उनकी गायकी मेरे हर अंश में निहित है। इसकी वजह भी मेरे पापा विपिन पटवारी ही थे। वे भी डा हजारिका के बहुत बड़े प्रशंसक हैं। एक बार जब पापा को कैंसर डिटेक्ट हो गया और मुंबई के लीलावती अस्पताल में उन्हें आपरेशन थियेटर के लिए ले जाया जा रहा था, तब उन्होंने मुझे आम जनों के लिये गाने को कहा। ईश्वर की कृपा से पापा का आपरेशन सफ़ल रहा, लेकिन मेरे कानों में पापा के शब्द गूंज रहे थे। मैं भोजपुरी में एक ऐसा महानायक तलाश कर रही थी, जिन्होंने डा भूपेन हजारिका की तरह आम जनों के लिये गाया हो। विद्यापति, महेंद्र मिसिर और भिखारी ठाकुर।
एक बार आरा जिले के बखोरापुर काली मंदिर में संगीत कार्यक्रम के दौरान मुझे एक वयोवृद्ध कलाकार को सुनने का अवसर मिला। उनके बोल भोजपुरी के ही थे, लेकिन लीक से अलग हटकर थे। उनके बोल के साथ जो स्वर लहरियां गूंज रही थीं, वह सब सपने के जैसा था। मैंने कार्यक्रम के संयोजक सुनील भैया (बखोरापुर काली मंदिर के संस्थापक सचिव) से इस बारे में जानना चाहा तब उन्होंने भिखारी ठाकुर के बारे में बताया। यही से मन में लगन लग गई कि भिखारी ठाकुर की शैली को आज की युवा पीढी के समक्ष अवश्य प्रस्तुत करूंगी।
फ़िर बहुत जगह हाथ-पांव मारने के बाद बिहार राष्ट्रभाषा परिषद के द्वारा प्रकाशित भिखारी ठाकुर रचनावली को पढने का अवसर मिला। मेरे सपनों को पंख लग गये। मैंने उस किताब में वर्णित गीतों का चयन किया और उस वयोवृद्ध कलाकार का अनुकरण कर अपने सपनों को “द लीगेशी आफ़ भिखारी ठाकुर” को साकार किया। संभवतः यह पहला भोजपुरी म्यूजिक एलबम है जिसका अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर विमोचन किया जायेगा। आगामी 4 जून को मारीशस में वहां के राष्ट्रपति इसे रिलीज करेंगे।
अंत में केवल इतना ही कि “द लीगेशी आफ़ भिखारी ठाकुर” में चयनित गीतों का आनंद लें और भोजपुरी के शेक्सपीयर भिखारी ठाकुर को श्रद्धांजलि दें। वे हमारे गौरवशाली इतिहास हैं। मैंने तो अपने तरफ़ से महज एक छोटा सा प्रयास किया है। आप सभी बिहारवासियों को मेरा यह प्रयास पसंद आयेगा और आने वाली पीढी इस प्रयास को आगे बढायेगी, ऐसा मेरा विश्वास है।
